BIKE & BIKE

Hi everyone,

We will organize another superb cycling weekend (1 night) loop around the famous Dong Ling Shan 东灵山 peak.

At 2300m it is Beijing’s highest peak.

I have developed a 2-day Bike & Bike package for riders.

Our schedule looks like this:

Saturday the 19th of May at 06:30

We assemble at the TREK store and get picked up by the vans. After a 2h drive to Fangshan District in the south-west, we are dropped off at the ancient gates of Zhangfang.

1 or 2 jinbeis will follow us with our baggage and pre-purchased supplies. They stay with us all weekend and carry luggage, food, equipment etc.

There are several ride options, as usual.

C riders can decide themselves how far or how long they wish to cycle.

The main ride of the day is a challenging 150 km in length or could be done in a shorter 120km.

The jinbeis take care of tired riders so there is no need to push yourself beyond what is comfortable.

Route 150km = http://www.bikemap.net/route/1395633

For C riders the proposed route is to stay in the bus until past the first summit (after 40km) and then start the ride. This reduces the C ride to 80km.

In words

Upon arrival at Zhangfang, A and B riders get out and start the day. C riders stay in the van and drive an additional 40km to the summit of Peak 1 on the National Road 108.

The first 20km are flat along the river and we count our way to Shidu Town. There, we turn right at the main T-junction and head north. After another 5km, there is a Y-fork in the road. Turn right and go north. This is the first climb of the day.

The summit is where the C riders start their ride.

At the backside of this climb you reach the National Road 108. Turn left and go west. Start climb number 2.

After a immensely long descent on the National Road G108 you reach the town of Jiulong. This is the pitstop zone of the day for lunch.

Remember to turn sharply RIGHT (almost 180 degrees) at the bottom of the descent.

In the town of Jiulong is another Y-fork. Keep to the right and go north. Start the long climb number 3. At the backside of this climb, you reach National Road G109.

Here you have the choice of going left and to the final ascent to Donglingshan Hotel or to add another 30km detour, including a climb, by turning right.

IF turning right, descend further into the town of Qingshui Zhen. Turn left off the G109 and go north. After 6km, turn left again and start the climb number 4. Descend back to the G109 and turn right to start the final climb to the Donglingshan hotel.

.

We will organize accommodation for you, with dinner in “go dutch” fashion. (total sum divided by participants).

We will stay at the Donglingshan Center located at the cable lift, near the summit.

Sunday the 20th of May

We will rise early and have breakfast at 07:00.

Breakfast will be a mix of hotel food and your own purchased supplies so we can have a serious biker’s breakfast to compensate for our travails.

The ride on day 2 is 150km long: = http://www.bikemap.net/route/1341878

As you can see from the profile, the bulk of the ride is downhill along the 109 road. However, the early part of the ride is quite challenging. C riders may want to skip this part and start the ride at the summit of the 2 climb of the day. From there the ride 80km.

In words

All riders descend Donglingshan, ride 3km along the valley floor and turn right, up the climb into the valley of Jiulongzhen. From this village, we take a sharp left and start the long climb into Beijing along the national road 108. At the summit, we keep along the main road and have a swift descend towards Beijing. We follow the road signs to Tanzhe temple which is the final stop of the weekend. We assemble at the big Tanzhe temple roundabout. From there it is a 90 minute ride back into town by bus.

Estimated time back: at dusk on Sunday 18:00.

Cost

We need a minimum of 10 riders to sign up.

Girlfriends, wives, friends, are welcome too if interested. Depending on the amount of riders the cost will vary.
